TIME.COM Story on the 2011 USA Memory Championship

I arrived in New York a few days ahead of the 2011 USA Memory Championship as I usually do and stuck to my routine of staying at the W hotel just a few blocks from the Con Edison building where the tournament is held. Arriving a few days early allows me to relax and focus on the tournament but also arrive early so the day before if there are any travel delays it would not effect me. Another benefit is that I have adjusted to the new time zone by arriving a few days early.

Arriving early also gives me the opportunity to conduct any media interviews that may occur in the days leading up to the tournament. Before the 2011 USA Memory Championship I was interviewed by Time Magazine and they did a video story on the USA Memory Championship.

It was a fun video where they followed me around New York City and I gave memory tips. I used the example of how to memorize the presidents of the United States with the loci method or journey method. Using this system you basically memorize a journey through a house or around a town and then use these locations to store mental images that remind you of what you need to recall. I explain this method in the video in Times Square.

After my section of the video, they also followed Nelson who ended up winning the tournament.

This is a well done video on the USA Memory Championship and gives you an idea of what the tournament is all about.

I am honored and thrilled to be a two time USA Memory Champion

Dallas Fort Worth Real Estate Speaker

The last 2 days I have had the great pleasure of #1 staying in my home town of Dallas/Fort Worth to give my memory training speech but also speak for real estate offices.

Twenty years ago when I got started in this business as a memory speaker, real estate offices were my bread and butter! I would call up the local Century 21, Keller Williams, Coldwell Banker and other real estate offices and offer them a 30 minute presentation on how a trained memory will increase sales.

This morning I spoke for Ebby Halliday, a local DFW based company, and shared with these realtors how training their mind is going to sell them more homes! Think about it, you sell a home to someone today or show them a home and then 6 months later you see them at the grocery store and you are able to say, ‘Sue! How are you? How are your kids Frankie and Lisa? How are you enjoying the home on Maple Street?’

WOW! What if a realtor could do THAT!?

Well, they can and that is what I talked to them about today. Not only that, but what if a realtor could go to a real estate seminar and remember all the key details FOREVER! Or remember all the key points on all the listings? Wow….well…it is POSSIBLE!

Let me give you two scenarios:

#1. You have a realtor who knows all the sales techniques and everything about the real estate business but he/she can’t recall names or remember listings

#2 You have a realtor who is average on sales techniques (or even below) and has adequate knowledge about the real estate business but he/she can meet you today and remember your name 2 weeks or 2 years later at the bank, grocery store, park, museum or ANYWHERE!

Who do you think in the long run is going to sell more homes?! You bet…#2!

Zig Ziglar puts it this way, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they first know how much you care.’ Dale Carnegie says that everyone’s favorite subject is themselves and the sweetest sound to a person’s ear is the sound of their own name.

So today, I spent the day with Ebby Halliday real estate in Dallas and ENJOYED sharing my memory techniques and seeing their eyes light up as they saw hope in their memories and even how it translated into increased sales.

Oh another thing I like about realtors…they are a FUN group and my talk is fun so we had a BLAST!!

Schedule me to be the memory speaker for your real estate conference!

Memory and Focus

What is the toughest thing for me, a memory speaker, in regards to memory at this stage in my memory career?

Easy…..FOCUS!!

Right now I am in the middle of memorizing 6,000 pieces of information for a MASSIVE memory training demonstration. It will be the crowing achievement of my 20 year career up to this point. I have done nothing that comes close to this. To be very candid with you the task itself, while massive breaks down into my simple memory training system that anyone can learn and implement.

The biggest challenge for me, a memory speaker, right now is not my memory capacity, it is remarkable as is yours. The biggest challenge that I am struggling with is FOCUS. Memory and focus really go hand in hand for success in memory. I have learned some memory focus games and one is to think of a shape (circle, square, rectangle, etc) and then think of a color for that shape. Now the goal is to close your eyes and 100% focus on that and nothing else. As soon as something enters your mind (your relationships, friendships, job, money, things to do, disagreements, movies, baseball or ANYTHING) stop the clock and see how long you could go thinking of just that one thing. Then just keep trying to get better and better scores. How awesome would it be if you could do this for 10 minutes?! If the shape changes sizes or starts morphing that doesn’t count. It needs to stay exactly the same.

Other items that should help your memory and focus are spinach, blueberries and Omega-3 fish oil pills.

But to be honest, my distractions of focus are things like not wanting to sit still long enough to memorize. I want to go out to a baseball game or meet with friends. Perhaps procrastination could also be substituted here. Yet, the memory training demonstration that I am in the process of attempting is HUGE…HUGE and I must work on my focus. So instead, I am reminding myself of the ‘pay-off’ if I can sit at this desk for hours on end and do nothing but memorize. Another thing I do is reward myself with breaks to keep my mind fresh.

So there you have it, the memory guy’s biggest challenge is not memorizing but sitting still long enough TO MEMORIZE. To be honest, I should be memorizing right now but I took a break to write this blog as part of my procrastination…so with that said….back to work (memorizing).

Martha Stewart Has Memory Speaker on Her Show

Any memory speaker out there would love to be on the Martha Stewart show and I am one of the few who has been.

It was quite and honor to sit beside the icon in March 2010 after I had become the two time USA Memory Champion. I have been on a lot of shows but I must say Martha (she lets me call her Martha! ha!) was probably the biggest name I had met. Let’s face it, 90% of America has heard the name Martha Stewart. I found her warm and friendly. Some of my friends said she was rude to me or harsh on me but I don’t think she was. After I had demonstrated that I had memorized every single page of her magazine she then began to quiz me:

What was the guys name who does make up for our show? What was he wearing?

What was the producer’s name? What was she wearing?

Well, it may or may not surprise you that I knew the females name (the producer) and what she was wearing but couldn’t tell you the make up artist Bradford’s name! :)

I am not the only memory speaker that Martha Stewart has had on her show. I heard that she had one on in 2008 or 2009 (but they didn’t say his name) then in 2011 the author of the book Moonwalking With Einstein Joshua Foer was on her show. So it does seem Martha has an interest in memory training and memory improvement.

In conclusion, I found Martha Stewart to be a very sharp, professional and fun woman. It was incredible to be interviewed by hear and I am just luck I guess that she likes memory speakers so well!

Here is the video of me on her show : (Oh by the way I would love to speak for your organization sometime!)

Albert Einstein and Me

What do I (Ron White memory guy) have in common with Albert Einstein? Well….honestly not much. :)

With that said, I have always been fascinated by the man and his life. So much so that I created a 6 CD product titled ‘How to Develop The Mind of Einstein’. Of all my products this one really is the most unlike the others. It is not instructing the listener to memorize, speed read, improve sales or give a step by step on motivation. Instead, I simply look at the life of Albert Einstein and what his thought process was like as he approached daily life challenges.

One of my favorite Einstein stories is when his son came to him and said, ‘Dad, I am so broken hearted I love this girl but she has rejected me.’ Albert Einstein, one of the greatest minds of all time said, ‘Son, life is like a bicycle in order to keep your balance you have to keep moving.’ What great advice on dealing with a broken heart!

He also had quite the sense of humor. One day he was talking with his driver and his driver remarked that he had heard Einstein give his lecture so many times on physics that he could probably give it. Einstein thought this would be hilarious so at the next lecture the driver gave the lecture and Einstein sat in the back. When the driver opened up for questions the first question was most definitely out of the driver’s realm of knowledge so he said, ‘Why that question is so simple I bet my driver could answer it and point to Einstein.’ :)

Another example of Einstein’s humor was when he picked up a baby and the baby started screaming. He looked at the baby and said, ‘Why you are the first one to give me your honest impression of me in years!’

While he most certainly had a tremendous sense of humor he also tackled the biggest challenges and mysteries of science. In true humble Einstein fashion he once remarked, “It’s not that I’m so smart , it’s just that I stay with problems longer .”

If you would like to learn more about the life of Albert Einstein perhaps my CD on How to Develop The Mind of Einstein would interest you.

Below is a photo of myself and Einstein and the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles (actually it is just a statue of Einstein but the real version of me)

Brain Games! National Geographic Channel

I am EXCITED to be a part of the National Geographic Channel’s new show Brain Games!

SUNDAY OCTOBER 9th 10pm EST is my portion but entire show airs at 8pm EST. It is a 3 hour special!!

This is going to be a FUN, FUN, FUN show!! How cool is it to be a part of it with one of the coolest guys, magician David Copperfield! (and no, I didn’t get to meet Mr. Copperfield. Yet! ha!)

For my part in this program we went to New York City and I did the standard memorizing names of people as they pass by. Yeah, I know – I did that on the History Channel but it is always a good warm-up :)

From there we approached people at the wax museum in New York City and I memorized a deck of cards in front of them. It was fun!

There was also a unique challenge were I would approach random people in NYC and challenge them that I could memorize the serial numbers on the dollar bills in their pockets. If I could then I got to keep the cash and if I couldn’t then I would double the $$ and give it back to them. How did it turn out? You have to watch the show…

The National Geographic Channel was very professional and fun. I am 100% confident this is going to be an awesome show. This clip of Brain Games! with Copperfield above is my first peak at the program and I can tell it is going to be awesome.

This is How I Would Describe My Memory Talk

What in the world does a memory speaker talk about in his memory talk? Lots of things I am sure…yet, if I had to describe my memory talk this video is how I would do it

I have perfected this memory talk since 1991. I remember being 19 years old and showing up at sales offices in Dallas/Fort Worth area to give my talk and they would look at me and say, ‘Okay Ron well when the speaker gets here just let me know and we will all go in together!’ Ha! That LITERALLY happened at a real estate office in Dallas.

Once a sales manager of a printing company said, ‘Are you out of high school yet?’ He told me that he couldn’t shut his company down for 30 minutes to have some kid talk to them. He assured me that they were professionals with a lot of experience and he would lose credibility if he had me in to speak for them. I asked him to give me 5 minutes and if I didn’t have their attention after 5 minutes I would leave. He agreed and I walked in and memorized all 30 names in 5 minutes and he smiled and let me continue. He eventually offered me a job!

So being a memory speaker wasn’t an easy road but because of that I perfected this presentation over 20 years and I promise you one thing….IT IS GOOD!! VERY GOOD! It will be fun, professional, educational and entertaining. You will see me do the same memory training demos that I have done on national television live for your group and then give skills everyone can use to improve their memory and productivity.

This is FUN!!
