World Series Game 2 -Rangers-Cardinals and That Towel

Some say, ‘So did this childish act really make you feel better?’

hmmmm……..

Good question……

Yeah…..I guess it did…..

2010 USA Memory Championship

This was one of my proudest moments in competing in memory tournaments. Sure, I had won the year prior at the 2009 USA Memory Championship but I had so much less adversity. Believe it or not, there is pressure once you win a tournament and everyone starts gunning for you. It was an akward feeling. Competitors who were once friendly to me became stand offish. I partly understood, afterall, I had the title that the coveted.

In the 2009 USA Memory Championship I was certain that I would win. As everyone filed in the room they were asking each other, ‘How has your training with cards been? What about numbers?’ I didn’t ask one person. The reason? I didn’t CARE!! I KNEW I was the best prepared and would certainly win.

In 2010 my times advanced but I had a lot of personal struggles to battle in the months prior to the tournament. One day, depending on how honest and open I chose to be about my private life I may or may not reveal these struggles. Needless to say, they were real. So real that the night before the tournament I could not sleep. I finally caught somewhere between 30-45 minutes sleep before entering a mental tournament.

Here is a video clip of the final round where I did end up winning. The format of this event is that they shuffle 2 decks of cards (we all have identical decks) and then we take turns repeating the order until one man is standing. You will see at the very start of this clip one of the competitors said the wrong card right off the bat and it was between me and another guy. I won…on 30-45 minutes sleep…I stayed calm under pressure and I won….perhaps my proudest moment in the USA Memory Championship adventure.

Stan Lee’s Superhumans Human Calculator

Guess who I got a text message from today? Ok, if you read the headline you can probably guess it! My good friend and human calculator Scott Flansburg. When I say Scott is my friend I don’t just mean we were on The History Channel Show Superhumans together. I mean Scott is really my friend. We had been in the same circle of friends for years and even chatted a few times on the phone. Then one day he updated his Facebook status that he was hanging out in St. Kildie beach! Are you kidding me?!!

Here is Scott and I at a bar in Australia:

At the time I was in Melbourne, I instant messaged him and a few hours later we were at a bar in St Kildie having drinks and he was amazing myself and my friend with his amazing math ability.

Check out Scott on the History Channel Show Superhumans:

Nat Geo Brain Games Memory Test

Okay, so you think that your memory is as good as a USA memory champion?

Here is a test created by the National Geographic Show Brain Games for their 3 part series.

It is a fun memory game. There is a way to memorize a list of words very easy and I have written an article on this that can be found at http://www.brainathlete.com/memory-palace/. This article really describes how I (or any person using a memory system even a USA Memory Champion or World Memory Champion can memorize FREAKISH amounts of memory and I mean FREAKISH!!.

Using the Memory Palace that I describe above I have memorized an 800 digit number in one hour at the World Memory Championships and many have memorized 2000 digits during the same event. So in reality, with a system this test put on by the National Geographic Channel Brain Games Show below is very easy. But that doesn’t meant that it isn’t also really fun. Try it out…

Until then, play this fun memory game by Nat Geo

2011 World Speed Memory Record in Rome

Okay, are you ready to see something FREAKY fast? I mean so bizarrely fast that you have a legit time believing if this is for real or not?

This is a video of the current World Speed Memory Champion, Ramón Campayo, memorizing 34 binary digits in a 0.5 seconds. Yes, you read that correctly….not in 1 second…not in 2 seconds….he memorized 34 binary digits (a series of 1 and 0) in less than 1 second. In 0.5 seconds. WOW! Just unbelievably amazing!

This took place in Rome in 2011. Watch this video and be amazed. Understand that there is no trickier here. 100% legit

New SImon Memory Game

Okay, so do you remember the old Simon memory game that you used to play as a kid? It was addicting and fun! I would play for hours trying to bear my own personal best scores as well as those of my friends as we memorized patterns. It was a BLASTS!

Although this game had very little to do with me becoming a USA Memory Champion and speaking on memory for a living it still is a really fun game to look back on and remember those child hood memories.

I enjoyed the game so much that I have even had the game installed on my memory building website memorise.org. Check this game out http://www.memorise.org/simon-memory-game

Eventually , over time I will have a leader  board on their so you can keep track of your high score and match it against others around the world. This is agoing to be a fun challenge for yourself and the Simon Brainiacs around the world. So go ahead and check it out http://www.memorise.org/simon-memory-game

Let me know your high score. So far I have only gotten to 12 :)

National Geographic Brain Games Pick Pocket

My portion on the National Geographic Channel show Brain Games was 100% devoted to memory as I am the memory guy on Nat Geo. But I really had so much fun with the entire show. One of the mind bending part of the show is the pick pockets! This guy named Apollo Robbins was really really really smooth! If this guy wasn’t so honest I think he could make a fortune pick pocketing unsuspecting people.

He even reveals some of his secrets of misdirection.

Remember, this is all about the brain and how the mind works. If you REALLY want to learn more about the brain don’t FORGET about my memory training CDs but until then just enjoy this quick and fun episode with Apollo

National Geographic Show Brain Games False Memory

I am still getting feedback from the National Geographic Show Brain Games that I was on! It was a ton of fun and if you watched the entire show you surely saw some mind bending videos.

There was one that really freaked me out by making you think you were looking at two different shades of gray but in reality it was the same shade of gray separated by a shadow. Really really fun and weird stuff. Check out this photo

It looks like two different colors right!? HA that is what I thought too! Now put your hand over the center where it seems to bend. Put your arm across this spot and you will see you are actually looking at the same color it is just an illusion! CRAZY!!! This was one of the first things you saw on the National Geographic Channel show Brain Games. They opened up with this.

Or how about this video where they jacked with your mind a little more on attention span

So Cool To Be on Nat Geo Channel Brain Games Show!

I must confess I wasn’t originally going to watch the National Geographic Show Brain Games from home! Okay, I was going to watch it from home but I wasn’t going to watch it live because I had tickets to the Texas Ranger baseball playoffs!

Then…the game two of the ALCS got rained out and the next thing you know I am sitting at home watching Brain Games as it aired for the first time on National Geographic obviously with so many of you!! What a thrill! It was a great treat to watch the show and simultaneously be Tweeting from my Twitter account http://www.twitter.com/memorytraining I gained about 150 new Twitter followers during the show.

I must confess I was a little disappointed with how frazzled I looked during the show. I got up at 4am and fly to NYC to be filming by 9am and then on a plane coming home at 5pm. So it was a fly and dash day and I look a little more than frazzled in the show. Yet, that is how it had to be.

It was a ton of fun and an honor to be in the same show as my boy hood hero David Copperfield. Yes the same magician who ‘walked’ through the Great Wall of China. How is that David always looks so cool, GQ and smooth and I look like I just came out of living with a family of 4 bears in a cave for 6 months?

Nevertheless, here is a clip of the show. WHAT FUN!!!

Memory Gym is FINALLY HERE!!!

I am soooo excited!!! I have been a fan of www.memorise.org for YEARS!!! This is one of the best sites on the internet to exercise your brain in a true memory gym format!

I purchased this website a few months ago and in the transfer to our wordpress based websites it caused some glitches in the games. GOOD NEWS!!! The glitches are FIXED and the Original Memory Gym is back up and running!!

Go directly to the gym page here http://www.memorise.org/memory-gym and play games to build your brain. We have

Flashing numbers – Select numbers to flash on the screen and then memorize them to be repeated back!! See if you can beat the computer!

Spoken numbers – digits will be spoken in intervals that you decide and see how many spoken digits you can recall. This is FUN!

Flashing words – Be tested on random words flashed on the screen with over 4 different language options!

Playing Cards – Would you like to memorize a deck of playing cards? Well you can!! Test your ability to memoirze a deck of shuffled cards. My personal best is 1 minute 1 second! See if you can beat me!

I am so excited about my new website www.memorise.org and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. The website has been around over a decade and we just recently gave it this facelift. Enjoy the games and let me hear about your fun and success with the website!
