Good Brain Foods – Foods Good For Memory

As a memory speaker I get asked a lot – Are there foods good for memory? What foods are good brain foods?

There are a long list of foods that have shown to be beneficial to your brain and memory but here I will list the foods that I personally take:

Omega 3 Fish Oil pills

Spinach

Blueberries

Water

Those are basically the foods that I focus on myself specially for my memory. To be honest I find myself avoiding foods that are bad brain foods as much as I take foods for benefit. The foods/items that I avoid because of their negative impact on my memory are:

Benadryl, Tylenol PM, Sleeping pills. – Any pill that puts you to sleep tends to cloud the head the next day

Alcohol – Some studies show that moderate alcohol consumption (1-2 drinks per day) is actually good for memory, however, there is no mistake that binge drinking or drinking to intoxicating has negative immediate and long term effects

Sugar Sweetners – These packages of sweetner have ingredients that cloud the head and create that ‘brain fog’.

So there you have it! I do believe there are some good brain foods or foods good for the memory. Here is a video I filmed in Belgium talking about brain foods

History of Memory Training – Simonedes and the Greek Method of Memory

So, did you know that the history of memory training dates back 2500 years. It is true! As the story goes (and it must be true because I saw it on the internet) Simonedes developed a method of memory he referred to as LOCI 2500 years ago after a tragic accident where the roof of a building collapsed and killed everyone inside. Sound like a crazy way to develop a memory method? Yeah, I guess it kind of does. But this 2 minute cartoon video below tells the story of how simonedes supposedly developed this method of loci or memory palace 2500 years ago to memorize information.

Check out this video

I have been teaching this Roman room memory method for over 20 years. You can apply it to giving speeches without notes, memorizing chapters of books, numbers, playing cards, poems, quotes, studying for tests and so much more. It is really incredible how powerful the human mind can be. I know people who have used this method to memorize a 400 digit that they had never seen before in 5 minutes!! Or a newly shuffled deck of 52 cards in 20 seconds!!! AMAZING!! This Roman room method is a great tool for anyone who is looking to improve their memory. In my opinion it is the best memory improvement system out there.

This is the exact system I used to become the two time USA Memory Champion!

Practice and let me hear about your success!

A 10 Year Old Salesman! – Care Candies

I just received the most AWESOME phone call from a 10 year old boy. He didn’t start off by saying he was 10. Instead, in the most professional and business manner he explained to me that he has a website http://carecandies.com/ and he wanted to do some advertising with me. I was smiling ear to ear listening to his sales pitch. It reminded me of myself when I was selling newspapers door to door at the age of 14.

Mark explained to me that his website sold candy to raise money for breast cancer and to also set up a college fund for himself. I was so proud of this 10 year old doing what so many adults in business won’t do!!

1. Call someone (too many adults rely on social media or email for business when a phone call is so much more effective)

2. ASK FOR THEIR BUSINESS!!!

I asked Mark how I could help him, he replied in the most professional manner and asked me if I could put a link on my website. Are you kidding me?! I am delighted to Mark!! I always admire an entrepreneur!! I had never met this young man before but his call did me a world of good.

http://carecandies.com/

go there and order some candy. I will:

1. Support this young businessman who at 10 is WORKING!
2. A portion goes to breast cancer
3. A portion helps Mark go to college
4. YOU GET CANDY!!

At the end of the call, I had to know. I asked, ‘So how old are you Mark?’ He replied, ‘Well you probably aren’t going to believe this. But to tell you the truth….I am 10 years old.’ He is right…it is hard to believe that someone so young understands picking up the phone and asking for business!

I told Mark I admired his entrepreneurship and then hesitated that he might not know that word. Are you kidding me? Of course he did! He replied, ‘Well my dad is a big entrepreneur and I am just trying to follow in his footsteps.’ Well done Mark. You are more than on your way.

Thanks for the call

Ron

Amazing Memory Demonstration Ron White Memorizing

For YEARS I have been doing this memory demonstration where before I speak I will meet up to 301 people (the most I have ever done was 301 in Canada at a conference) then when I am up on stage I will have the group stand up and I will go down the rows repeating their names. June 12, 2009 I spoke for Erik Swanson’s Universal Seminars conference in Houston, Texas and I did this memory improvement demonstration. An interesting side note, is that Erik has seen me do this so many times and he has learned the system himself so well that he now does this name memory demonstration in his speeches and can easily get over 100 names!

I enjoy doing this for many reasons:

1. It demonstrates the power of a trained memory
2. It gets an amazing response from the audience every time
3. During the speech it enables me to use people’s name which is the sweetest sound to their ear
4. It is a RISK!! What if I don’t get it? Then I risk looking like a fool. But the reward far outweighs the risk and although I rarely score 100% correct (typically in the 97-99% correct range) I have yet to fail at the demo. But the risk is an adrenaline rush for me.
5. To continue to exercise my brain and push myself

Interesting enough, my first memory improvement speech was in Fort Worth, Texas for a printing company named Summit Press. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was 1992 and there were 5 people in this meeting. I only talked to 3 of them because I wasn’t sure I could remember all their names!! Ha! Talk about butterflies as a memory speaker. Now, more than 20 years later 5 is something I will do in 15 seconds :)

The key to remembering names is not to show off, it is to make people feel important and special and build relationships. The person who does that will be leaps and bounds ahead of the business person who says, ‘I know I sold you a car two months ago because I never forget a face but could I get your name again?’

So enjoy this memory demonstration and if you want to know how I did it visit this link for a free names training video http://www.brainathlete.com/remember-names-faces/

A Guy I Met Named Clayton

I recently spoke at my good friend, James Malinchak’s Big Money Speaker bootcamp. James and I have been friends for a few years and had common friends for many years. It was great fun to speak at his event and spend 3 days learning from him. I had the opportunity to hear some great speakers including James, Glenn Morshower (actor from tv series 24), Stedman Graham and Sean Astin from the movie Rudy, The Hobbit and others. But the speaker that left perhaps the most lasting impression was one I was not expecting…

When I arrived at the event I began memorizing names as I normally do at every event. There was a young man named Clayton and I shook his hand and went on my way memorizing. He was nice but I had no clue of his story. Then on the last day of the event (3 days later), James introduced Clayton and I was captivated. In the middle of Clayton’s talk someone texted me to meet them in the lobby they had a business idea to share. I texted back they needed to wait 20 minutes. Afterall, I needed to hear Clayton’s story.

At age 6 Clayton was locked in a small closet inside a metal cage by his mother and step father. The abuse is so repulsive I won’t even mention it here. Here is an interview with him when he was rescued and I honestly don’t know how you could listen to it and not want to cry. http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Claytons-Chilling-Interview-Tapes-Video

If you want to read his entire story go here http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Claytons-Survival-Story

I was so struck by Clayton because when I met him in August he was at a program called LEAP where students go to learn and grow. Then I saw him at James Malinchak’s seminar, once again taking notes and learning. How easy would it be for this now college age student to say, ‘I am going to stay home and complain about how I was abused and blame everyone else for my lot in life.’ It would be EASY for him to do that. Heck…I hear people do it EVERY DAY and they don’t have HALF the excuse Clayton does. He has a REAL reason to blame others in his past but he doesn’t. He simply focuses on the future and continues to grow and learn. I am sure he has struggles and has ups and downs. We all do. But he is continuing to grow and move forward and we don’t all do that….

This was powerfully inspiring to me so I stayed for his talk. Clayton is an inspiration to not blame your past but take charge of your own destiny. During the seminar I only asked Glen Morshower and Sean Astin for photos but I couldn’t help but ask Clayton as well. His attitude is beyond inspiring and the next time I begin to blame those in my past all I need to do is look at this photo we took together. Thanks for the inspiration Clayton….
