Memory Training Question Answered

I get tons and tons of memory training questions.

After all, I have been teaching these seminars for 21 years now. YIKES! Can that be true!

I still remember that first seminar I taught at the Wilson World Hotel in Irving Texas….wow!

After all these years of teaching seminars people say, ‘Ron, can you use the memory files over and over again?’ In other words, ‘Do you create new files each time you want to memorize something and if you don’t then why not? Won’t you start confusing the material?’ The answer again is NO! You will not confuse the data and ALSO you do NOT create new files every time that you want to memorize something.
If you don’t understand the memory system I am describe and need background on it. Here is a good explanation http://www.brainathlete.com/memory-palace/

So here is the answer to that question

I am a Salesman!

Do I see myself as a speaker?… Nope.
Author?… Try again.
Memory expert?… No.
Memory champion?… nah.
Memory record breaker?….nope.
Entrepreneur?… Closer, but not exactly.
Instructor?… Getting colder.
Motivator?… Wrong.
Salesman?… BINGO!!

I am a salesman and very proud of that! This is how I see myself and the question is why don’t more people see themselves as sales people?

What about the talented musician who has the voice of an angel and can play a piano better than Liberace, but does not think that he is a salesman? I will tell you what – he will have to rely on getting lucky with a big break or hunt for a promoter. Or maybe the dentist who has opened up his shop and waits for the customers to walk through the door.

Most people will invest all their assets in marketing before they invest one hour in cold calls, yet cold calls is where it all starts.

First of all, you must get the belief through your head that we are all sales people. Whether you think you are or not – you are! If you participate in capitalism, you better see yourself as a salesperson or be dependant upon others for your success.

Next, abandon the idea that being a salesperson is below your dignity. Do you know what is really below your dignity? Not fulfilling your potential because you didn’t want to “lower” yourself to being a salesperson.

Realize that sales all begins with a cold call. Cold calling is not so bad. It is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and at the very least open the prospect’s mind to your idea. After you do this for a few weeks a ratio will emerge and you will begin to see how many cold calls it takes to get a sale. This is when it becomes fun and you work to improve your ratio. Make it a game!

Understand that the difference between making a living and making a fortune in sales starts with networking referrals. Brian Tracy tells us that the average person has a sphere of influence (people they see at PTA meetings, neighbors, family, friends, etc.) of 260 people. If you don’t ask for referrals you won’t get them.

Close the sale! The salesperson who has a great presentation but can’t close is a conversationalist and conversationalists don’t get paid very well. At the end of your presentation give them an alternate choice close – “Would you like blue or red?” That is a close and non-threatening. Or simply ask, “Why don’t you give it a try?”

Finally, remember when a person is sold professionally, people enjoy it! I spoke recently at a real estate office in San Antonio. The sales manager stood up when I finished and said, “Wow! I don’t think anyone who was trying to sell us something has made us feel so good in the process!” I yelled from the back of the room, “I am a salesman!” He enjoyed being sold and so did his group because it was professional. When done right, the sales process should be fun!

Are you a dentist, musician, author, speaker, doctor, lawyer or anything without the title of sales? If you are, do yourself a huge favor and begin to see yourself as a salesperson! Making cold calls is not below your dignity. Not fulfilling your potential is what is below your dignity.

How I became a memory speaker

I am a two time USA Memory Champion.

I have held the record for the fastest to memorize a deck of cards in the USA and memorized an 800 digit number at the World Memory Championships in 2009.

I must be a GENIUS! I must have been memorizing French when I was 3 and playing the piano when I was 4!

Not at all. I was an 18 year old telemarketer when a guy who sold memory seminars crossed my path and he thought I was a good salesman and he offered me a job without even asking me how my memory was! 100% true story…

If you want to book me to speak as a memory speaker for YOUR conference check this out www.whybookron.com

Here is that story…

How to Memorize

I am a 2 time USA Memory Champion. I have memorize a TON of information in my life and I can teach anyone to memorize almost anything.

I have a online game/applications that flashes words on the screen and then you can test your recall by typing in the words that you remember. There is a way that you can DRAMATICALLY improve your memory and recall in a game like this…or anything for that matter.

1. Starting at your front door # 10-15 pieces of furniture in your home. Then get to the point where you can close your eyes and mentally walk through your home visualizing the items

2. Then when you see the words in the game (or anything you want to remember) imagine the words interacting with the furniture. For example, if the 1st piece of furniture in your home is a table and the first word is a dog then imagine a dog barking at the table. If the number 2 piece of furniture is a lamp and the number 2 word is water imagine water being poured over lamp

3. Then to recall the data mentally walk back through your home. Here is an example of a little girl using this to memorize the Presidents.

Here is a video of me explaining more about this:

My Friend The Human Calculator

I was on a tv show on the History Channel called, ‘Superhumans’. It was a show created by Stan Lee (the Marvel Comics creator) and in the show they did segments with real life ‘Superhumans’. Well Scott was the first Superhuman on the show (I was the last), we book ended the first season of Stan Lee’s Superhumans.

Ironically though, that isn’t where I met Scott. We have been friends for about 6-7 years and occassionally we get to hang out and share a beer. He recently visited Dallas to give a speech for a group of math teachers and invited me along. I have seen him do his math demonstrations many times but normally just at a bar with me, him and a few friends. I recently watched him do this in front of 1500 teachers. Not only that, they were MATH teachers and were amazed by his skills.

I filmed this short video of his mental math. You aren’t going to believe it. Scott Flansburg is truely a human computer.

By the way, I bought his book (that you can get his new books here:

https://www.createspace.com/4102048

and it is REALLY good. I have been using the techniques I read in his book years ago. I was talking to a math teacher after Scott’s speech and the teacher hadn’t heard of the techniques that I use on a DAILY basis because I have read Scott’s book. Again…MATH TEACHERS don’t know this stuff. Get the secrets from the man himself! (By the way, I don’t get a dime or even recognition if you buy the book, this is not an affiliate link. I am recommending it for only 1 reason – to help you….it’s that good)

Here is the video of Scott. Prepare to be AMAZED!!!

Thoughts on Baseball Fans – Nothing to Forgive

I am in London during the baseball playoffs so this means I did not get to attend the final Ranger game of the season as they lost to the Orioles. I stayed up until 2am and listened until 4am but feel asleep around the 7th inning. Frankly, I saw what was coming and I couldn’t stand to stay awake for the heartbreak. Yet, when I woke up to reports of fans booing Josh Hamilton I was very disappointed in our fans, to a point of disgust. It reminded me of this excerpt from my book, 22 Success Lessons from Baseball

Nothing To Forgive

This one is for Mitch Williams, Bill Buckner, Ralph Branca, Donnie Moore and every Cub since World War II. It’s for the ’64 Phillies, the ’78 Red Sox and the ’87 Blue Jays. It’s for all the players who attempted great things and fell short. It’s for those who risked failure and dared to appear inept, clumsy and foolish. It’s for every “goat” who accomplished more than 99.9% of those in their field and are chided as failures.

The ‘Wild Thing’ Mitch Williams trotted in from the bullpen to shutdown the Toronto Blue Jays and seal the World Series victory for the Phillies. Instead, he served up the game winning home run to Joe and broke the hearts of everyone in Philadelphia. Williams received death threats. Bill Buckner failed to stop a ball from rolling through his legs in 1986 and will forever be remembered as the man who squandered Boston’s World Series dreams. Bill was asked if he considered suicide after his error. What kind of person asks this question? As far-fetched as that question sounds, Donnie Moore did commit suicide.

Donnie Moore was the California Angels pitcher who gave up the game winning home run to Dave Henderson in the 1986 American League playoffs that allowed Boston to advance to the World Series. He had a two-strike count on Henderson and was one pitch away from the victory and the Series when he threw that final pitch. No one will be able to prove that this episode is what led Moore to shoot his wife and then himself. Although, those that know him best say that was the catalyst. The beginning of the end.

‘Ever since he gave up the home run…he was never himself again’, said Dave Pinter, Moore’s agent for twelve years. He blamed himself for the Angels not going to the World Series. He constantly talked about the Henderson home run…I tried to get him to go to a psychiatrist. But he said, ‘I don’t need it…I’ll get over it.’ ‘…that home-run killed him.’The former Angel, Brian Downing, echoed the sentiment by simply saying, ‘you destroyed a man’s life over one pitch.’

If we were honest with ourselves, we would admit that we are not on the field with these men because they have talents, skills and abilities that we don’t have. That they are there because they have a discipline that we don’t have and that they are willing to risk failure for the small chance of great success. Yet, we chide and harass them for their failure as if they have disgraced our team, city and families. When in reality, they are the best of the best. If there is a beginning there is an end. If there is a winner there must be a loser. It’s as simple as that. Although, all too often, we stand indignant, unrelenting and unforgiving.

Let me say it once and for all. Bill Buckner, Donnie Moore, Mitch Williams, Johnny Pesky, Tom Niedenfuer and every other unfairly criticized player, the reason that we don’t forgive you is that there is nothing to forgive. Nothing at all. You dared to stand in the arena. You dared to stand in the winner’s circle in the midst of grand circumstances and fell short because someone had to.

What prompts a person to be critical of another? Is this admonishing intended for good or is it vindictive? The kind of criticism that finds its origins in an effort to belittle another person because of their failure only brings an unwelcome light to the dark closet of their own insecurity.

The men and women who risk and fail are indeed far better off than those who stand outside of the fire. Herman Melville said, “He who has never failed somewhere, that man cannot be great.” The man who sits in the stands of life will be sentenced to an existence of unrealized dreams. The individual who dares to suit up and then fails, has already succeeded.

Teddy Roosevelt tells us that the true failure is “The cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.” Thank you for knowing defeat. Thank you for risking. No, you are not forgiven. There is nothing to forgive.

So to all those who are boing Josh Hamilton, I don’t blame him for one minute and his quote about shaking the dust of a town off his feet is 100% ok by me. (Although I would hate to see a Ranger team without Josh)

Video of Me Memorizing Foreign Names

For over 20 years I have been performing a memory demonstration at speeches that I speak at. I will go around the room and introduce myself to everyone I meet and then when in front of the group I will repeat everyone’s name from memory and as I do they will sit down.

I often get asked the question, ‘But what about FOREIGN names?’ My answer is always is, ‘It is just the same as American names. Exactly the same method but because I haven’t heard many of the names before I will have to create pictures for the names on the spot and that takes time.’ So, in reality I do it all the time with foreign names as probably 30% of my talks are out of the USA. Just in the current 2 week period I will do this demonstration in Italy, Germany, Nigeria and Ghana. Next week will be London but I expect that won’t be too tough :)

Check out this video of me memorizing names for this group in Nigeria. Then, keep in mind not only did I perform the demonstration but then I taught them how to do it. For an explanation of how YOU can do it too click the link at the end of the video.

Your Brain is Half Blind

Watch the video below and count how many times the players wearing WHITE pass the basketball.

This test is a test of selective attention.

This test demonstrates that your brain, although very complex can fill in information and all together ignore other information if it isn’t what you are looking for or were expecting to see.
